Yaolan is making multimedia, intertwined with socio-political and technological contexts in borderless contemporary society. She likes to use her professions to empathize on human conditions and stimulate creative thinking.
She studied Art and Design at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, received a Bachelor degree from Central Saint Martins College in London and her Master of Information Design from Design Academy Eindhoven. Her works range from graphics, book design, product and spatial design, moving image to audial-visual experiments.
Yaolan was born and raised in Pearl River Delta of Southern China. She is currently based in Amsterdam, working and traveling between Netherlands and China.
Amnesia State is a design fiction, which characterises an ever-growing Internet habitat where creative energies clash with the surveillance infrastructures. The project is based on extensive, in-depth research about a control information environment. Digital forgetting acts as a subtle strategy to explore the subject of temporality and human existence.
The project deals with the behaviours of the individual and the official bodies in an information environment that is constantly monitored and censored by the authorities. In this closed regime, the protection of national ideology legitimize the over-control upon mass media, as well as the lack of freedom that people’s access to having and sharing information.
Amnesia is treated as a metaphorical rendering of the delicate symbiosis between state and individual on the Internet labyrinth, where a sophisticated system instantaneously filters reality, while creative enthusiasts keep spreading their dissenting views to facilitate socio-political changes.
The flowering of information technology has opened up a new social laboratory. Although the surveillance infrastructures spread anxiety and fear, a creative alliance is building up a civic wall – shifting energies from high-profile individuals to greater crowds of citizens who are less conspicuous. This is a significant step in the democratic process.
Amnesia State is not only a satirical comment on the context of censorship. It aims at sharing genuine concerns about the default of digital remembering and global mass surveillance. Can this design metaphor help us to evade the strict warning lines and reach as many audiences as possible? Can creativity lead us to think differently about civic freedom and freedom of expression in the digital era?

Blacklist, Whitelist is a glossary set-up representing two different Internet systems under the current conflicting powers. It concerns with ethical discussions and questions of right and wrong. Keywords, together with searching results: texts and images, provide multiple angles reflecting ideologies, events, people associated and their desires in a media saturated environment.
It is an alternative index, which breaks down barriers that limit freedom of access to online information from one side to another. The sophisticated content-filtering system defines a border of two spheres. A variety of stories lies in the grand narration from the pool of facts and truths.
Compositions in time and space
I use music and sound to experiment everyday activities in domestic space and time.
The floor-plan drawings use domestic alleyways to divide rooms into different functions, and common area for dwellers. Shared lifestyle appears vividly on the translucent historical paper sheets of architecture drawings from Central housing projects by Hartsuyker. I imagine walking through the entrance of the houses, along the alleyway, living room, alleyway, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, study room, alleyway again, courtyard, alleyway again...Graphical compositions were taken as an experimental tool to investigate different functions and atmospheres of these spaces. The cacophony the compositions play in the space, could be paralleled with the system of music: pitch, rhythm, harmony, form, timbre and tones of varied instruments, etc.
